Firstly apologies for starting a new thread, but I'm going to take advantage of the sales that are currently going on and would like you experience people to suggest the number 1 and 2 picks from the list below.

I'm a tall (6' 4"), heavy (16 st) guy so would require a sturdy bike. I will be cycling 20 miles (2 x 10) a day on terrible, bumpy, pot-holed roads so need a bike (with rims/tyres) that can handle this terrain. I may (MAY) venture on a canal gravel path so it would need to handle that too. I prefer the upright position for comfort. I'm not too worried about lightness or speed as I will never race the bike. Comfort over performance! It must be able to take front and rear mud-guards and a rear pannier rack.

The bikes are:

A lot of bikes I know but its so I can pick a good one. I've numbered them so you can simply give your favourites (i.e. you could say first pick is 7 and second is 2).

Of course I will try them (or sit on them) first but I won't go to every shop so I would like you to pick two so I can narrow the selection down. Any of the prices listed is fine for me. I'm a novice so not fussed about brands, although I do require BANG FOR BUCK.

Thank you for your help.

I'd vote for no7 just because I'm a gaint defy owner and I love it . No 3 looks interesting being a triple chainset plenty of gear range and reseasonable spec .
Basically you will get many reccomdations and it will come down to your choice my advice is don't rush try as many as you can and find the one for you

Thanks. I like the clear and concise choices and the reason(s) why.
Anyone else...? Your suggestions are very much welcomed.

I won't be any help to you at all... it took me months to decide what to buy for myself! But, you said you like an upright riding position and these all have dropped bars, with 'endurance style' geometry frames, but still... not really upright, might take some getting used to if you haven't ridden dropped bars. A touring bike would probably do all you wanted and usually take mudguards and racks, may even come with mudguards and racks, save buying your own..:okay: What about Dawes bikes, or one of the other touring bike manufacturers? you can get flat bar tourers, and Dawes usually have some good discounts about this time of year, ( I think).

(Told you I wouldn't be any help...)

Surely, the main consideration is the quality and fit/comfort rather than the look of the bike. For me, I do not think I care what the bike looks like (within reason, or the brand) as long as I'm getting a good deal (bang for buck).
So far it seems the Marin Lombard is the most popular suggestion.
Please keep the suggestions coming. Thanks.

Fair enough but for most people looks seem to be pretty important - bang for buck matters not a jot if you don't want to ride the ugly lump. As for fit/comfort you must try them. Quality - they are all good quality, others will have opinions on differentiation.

I see you like the Marin bikes. Why did you go for the Argenta over other bikes in the current sales?

I'm glad I've added this thread as I thought the Specialized Synapse, Giant Defy 4, GT GTS Expert would've been the picks due to the brands they are (but then again I am a novice).

Still seeking further picks/suggestions. Thanks all.
