Wood pigeons will happily eat whole peanuts, I watch it every day.
I don't deter anything, they all have their own feeding times and after some years of pigeon shooing I've finally accepted that no species is more worthy than others and I might as well let them get on. I put some food in flat dishes low down, the pigeons prefer feeding from that and then the small birds get the feeders to themselves, mostly. Blackbirds and robins hoover the floor for whatever is dropped. I get a lot of black squirrels too, they're also welcome.
I still shoo magpies, but that's because this time of year they're trying to eat blackbird chicks. I know it's natural behaviour but the blackbird nest is in my garden and I feel quite protective of their young.
