We passed through this place in France last year...

We stopped at this place in Bavaria, on the way back from a skiing holiday in Austria sometime in the early Eighties. Just to pose for a photo by the road sign. View attachment 403420

Edit: The road sign was always being being nicked by people like me, as a trophy. The locals got fed up. I think they used seriously industrial "tamper-proof" fixings later.

The design/colour of the sign makes it look like a mandatory instruction.

There is a Farking in Austria . You can go from Wa*k to Farking in less than 3 hours

Penistone

Intercourse, in Amish country Pennsylvania

Years ago I used to submit company details to online directories but on some, the swear/porn filters would never let me put Penistone, Scunthorpe, Cockfosters, Middlesex, etc. in the address. Always made me chuckle when emailing the directory owners, trying to explain that Sussex is a county and not something rude.

There's a Splott in Cardiff which sounds pretty grim... and the village of Upton Snodsbury always made me chuckle. I can't imagine any of the lower classes living in such pompous sounding place.

Well there was

Staines

which of course used to make folk snigger

The town worthies got sick of this for of course folks thought of stains ON something

So a few years ago, sick of the jokes, they changed the name to

Staines upon Thames.

Which beggars/buggers (see above) belief.
