Wouldnt like this much at all - in the depths of winter it wouldnt be getting light until nearly 10 am up here. Not that far north either just Glasgow.

If it is such a good idea why are the likes of Italy or Germany not wanting to bring their clocks forward to CET+1 to get an extra hour daylight in the evening?

If we're allowed to mess about with time - can secs be made to last longer?

They do, the closer you are to sea level. Gravity distorts time, so that clocks at sea level run slower than clocks at several thousand feet above sea level.

Fact.

Tongue slightly in cheek, but perhaps we should go decimal... 10 hours a day, 100 minutes an hour, 100 seconds a minute. That would keep the maths simple. Seconds would be only slightly shorter than as present.

Actually, I would go for CET. If people or even a region need light at a particular time of their day, they can just start work, school, or whatever, and hour later or earlier as needed.

anyone remember the 'new' world time that swatch tried to create for the internet age...it was called the beat or something like that?

I'm not sure about Germany and Northern Italy - but in the South of Europe the times of sunrise/sunset are much less variable than the UK remember.

The difference is negligable - although of course, like us, they still change their clocks to maximise evening sunshine.

ECT for me every time, for social and economic reasons.

We are a few hours by train from Brussels / Paris but have to change the time by an hour for no reason. This must be a bummer for businesses. All because a few Scottish people will wake up in the dark?

I wake up in the dark every morning for about 2 months and I live as far south as you can go without getting wet. It depends when you get up.

I have my recreational time after work - and the longer, lighter the evenings are the better.

EDIT : and I'm Scottish - at least my parents are, and I've been brought up to consider myself Scottish. (Still support Scotland in the 6 nations  )

banning time would be the best thing that ever happened to me. i'm so shite at timekeeping that my boss once bought me an "ish watch"... a novelty watch that had the 2nd hand missing and each of the numbers on the dial had "ish" written after it. ie.. 1ish, 2ish, 3ish etc etc.

my boss told me as long as i got to work at 9ish that was ok by her

best watch i ever had, but lost it.
