2 charming PCSOs are handing out warnings on the Vanborough Hill Gate at Greenwich Park for cycling on the 20ft of pavement that leads to the cycle path.

Thought you might like to know.

No real Police to issue FPN's then.

If I lived near enough I'd go there, jump off the bike, run with it above my head straight past them and hop back on in the cycle lane

as it is, i can't

that really helps to promote cycling as an alternative to driving a car - this country is a mess!

This reminds me of a time last year when outside of the university campus a short stretch of path connects 2 cycle paths. the police were handing out fines to students for cycling on it. The university endlessly discourage the use of cars and try hard to promote cycling and use of public transport. Hitting cash strapped students with fines for cycling to uni - WTF!

Well it is against the park rules to cycle on that bit of path. And to be honest there are some nutters on bikes who assume they have right of way over any one else going through that gate.

There was support from cyclists in the area for the 20mph speed limit to be imposed in Greenwich Park and I assume once you have the attention of the police, they will start to enforce other laws in the park.

From experience, they will target the cyclists cycling the wrong way up King William Walk next.

20ft..?

Is that it?

Thats nothing, I've already said about the copper I saw b*ll*cking a guy for riding across the 2-3 foot of pavement here:

Not sure if a fine was issued.

It's lawful to drive across the footpath to get to somewhere you have legitimate access to (like a drive) so I'm not sure that's illegal.

Funnily enough I went through Greenwich Park for the first time in ages today. Hard work on a single speed! Luckily there were no plastic policeman around. I seem to recall that a cyclist was killed on the road through the park by a speeding motorist a few years' back. I trust that when the road is open to motor traffic that the local constabulary are being proportionately more vigilant on drivers' behaviour.

At a time where value for money policing is key - what a zarking waste of police resources.

The two PCSO's [and i have a lot of time for them - they have a very hard job, they get the same confrontation from the public as PCs but without the powers of a constable to deal with it] prob thought 'what a shoot job'-pandering to a busy-body with no job sitting about watching cyclists pedal over two feet of turf making a complaint.

Most PCSO's would rather walk around reassuring the public.

Could someone please write to Sir Paul - you know , the Commish and remind him what policing could be about - giving proper bad people a hammering.. or am i being to harsh.........

Has everyone here heard of Critical Mass? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Mass ("monthly political-protest rides"). How about organising one so big they just can't "warn" everybody? It'd also act as a protest against this really stupid waste of paid officer's time - make sure people from the local press turn up and you might get the cops to just abandon the whole thing.
