I cycle to make other people cycle

Hmmm,

I'm fitter so I can do stuff better/more, so second order differences I suppose.

Just love cycling.
It's what I do.

Why do I cycle? I'm not sure there is a 'why'.

I was taught as a child. It was seen by my parents (and many others) as a thing children ought to be taught; like spelling, drawing, cooking, raking leaves, playing the piano and saying please and thank you.

It got me to the swimming pool and to cubs and (later) to school and scouts and friends' houses.

As with cooking, it has never occured to me to stop.

As with all the activities in my first paragraph, it has seemed a sensible thing to teach to my own children. So far it seems to have benefitted them as much as it did me.

There are many families today in which (even where money and space are plentiful) children are not taught to cycle. I am not sure why this is. It seems a missed opportunity, but I'm sure there are other and equally valid skills I haven't taught my kids.

I saw a survey like this in an Australian magazine, and it took a moment to work out what worried me about it. The ostensible question was "why do you cycle to work?", but after reading the choices I realised the real question was "Why don't you drive to work?" Neither that nor this had the option, "I need to go somewhere"

When I was a teenager my bike gave me freedom and also a means to make money (paper round and leaflet delivering).

Only got back in to cycling as a means to get to work when work moved from the town where I live to the next town (4 miles) and seemed stupid getting the bus everyday for such a short distance.

Unfortunately I rediscovered my love of cycling and on reflection the bus would have been cheaper!!!
