A wet suit lets in water, it is tight fitting so the water gets trapped, is heated by the body and along with the neoprene of the suit provides insulation. A dry suit is completely sealed with latex cuffs and neck so no water goes in. Underneath you wear an insulation layer which can be anything from a light fleece to a big padded onesie depending on how cold it is in the water. Drysuits are much warmer and more comfortable than wet suits and are the only proper option in Northern Eurpean seas.
