I love the Special's first album, but 2nd and 3rd also have terrific moments, just with a different vibe. Hey look, it's the Specials in smileys:

I guess Ian Curtis never meant anything to me, so I'm making my judgement solely on the music and not on the whole mythos that surrounds the band.

Substance is a collection of singles (A-sides and B-Sides) and compilation tracks. Great collection, but not necessarily their best stuff.

Try listening to Unknown Pleasures or Closer as a proper and complete albums.
