I go to the pub once a week because I enjoy a couple of pints and a song at the karaoke. Some of the regulars look hard as nails but I find them all good people and have never seen/heard any trouble while there.

I go once in a blue moon, especailly as I don't drink any more. Last time I did it was 4 quid a pint in Cambridge:wacko:

Here you're more likely to get a trio of students of various nationality smile politely and say "excuse me, can I get to the bar?"

Gee, you should all come to my local, it's bleddy lovely. I know I am really lucky. All the tales of drunken farmers with shotguns are occasional and very much in the past (it was a bit wild here in the 60s-70s, but only about once every 6 months!). The place is run by a local lad and his wife - his mum still lives in the village, and I have to say that set-up is almost unbelievable for a tied house. They work incredibly hard, have a young family, it's the sort of village where everyone knows everyone, they've found a great chef who cooks good grub which is nice enough to dine out on but not too posh or spenny so you can have a cheapish lunch if you need it. They do all sorts of events - local bands (ok I avoid those), beer fests, Christmas events including a magician on Christmas eve for the kids. The place is nice and clean but traditional and unposhed-up and has various amusing (inane) messages chalked up on the beams, some of them dating back to those glory days of 1974. Darts, pool. Decent ale. All types drinking. Even the dogs are lovely.

Blimey I am just realising how lucky we are really.

It is also within strolling distance of Gany Towers.

We've got a similarly cracking pub as our local; it has always been the beating heart of the music scene and now the new landlords are turning it into a cracking real ale free house www.thesteamboat.co.uk

It would appear that pub that have refused to evolve have either died or become scary places. I once witnessed the landlord of a different local pub yell down a visiting friend of mine because she dared to ask if they sold wine!

To quote NoFx 'dinosaurs will die'.

some good pubs by us. North Star, Red Lion, Colebrook. sadly there are some bad pubs. funnily though the bad pubs all have a flat roof.

My answer? Very, very rarely. Struggling to remember the last time. Compared with the price of bottle of wine or a coupla bottles o' beer from Aldi (other supermarkets ARE available) it's way to expensive an activity for me.

I don't know of a bad pub round here in terms of customers a few bad landlords though. Ganymede & Andrew-Culture have just described my local (albeit 6 miles away). Other locals that have recommended it are Alfred Lord Tennyson, Johnston, something to do with printing and.....bloke called Boswell whose fame revolves around him and his mate being hit by lightening! Suspect a bit more to it than that.

I'm lucky that I have some very nice, welcoming pubs in my area. My closest local used to be a horrid, pub full of ne'er do wells, but they shut it, changed the owners, spruced it up, banned all the nasties and now it's a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon or evening.
