Not wishing to make light of your mums death but, depending upon how you interpret your post the two highlighted sections could be a bit too close for comfort.
Ouch!

The one good thing was that the frozen boiler didn't thaw out until the morning that I got back so It only got to spray a few score litres of water into the house rather than the thousands that it would have done if it had happened at the start of the 2 week period for which I was away.

I normally turn off the water if I go away in the winter, but being suddenly called down for that final vigil distracted me from the standard routine.

I wasn't taking the mick or anything like that, it's just that I stopped mid sentence and went back to read it again in a sort of, " what was that again?" kind of way.

And I didn't think it really appropriate to put some kind of smiley in my original reply.

No.

Helium in it's gaseous state is lighter than air, but in it's liquid state under pressure in a canister is heavier than an empty canister.

Friend of mine went to work for CERN, in the H&S briefing he was told what to do if there was a Helium leak. One of the new staff asked "How can we tell if there is a leak" and the answer was "If you voice sounds like Donald Duck then there is a leak"

Is an empty canister of helium heavier than a full one?
If a helium balloon is tethered in a moving car and the car brakes, which way does the balloon swing?

If an air-filled balloon is hanging down in a helium- filled moving car and the car brakes, which way does the balloon swing?

Yes, a very unfortunate choice of words ...

Fortunately, time is a great healer. I had the trauma of a 9 day bedside vigil, and then came home to the boiler/flood issue - it was a pretty crappy surprise!

Excellent question, but badly off topic as there's an important physics principle to give you the answer.

I've never had to do anything like that, I hope time has been a good healer.
