Why do football managers spend 90mins+ every match gesturing, pointing and shouting at their players. Surely any tactics etc were discussed before the match but see them in or out of seat yelling instructions etc and to no avail.
I have noticed that Rugby managers tend to shout and scream less
often sit in the stand and just pass the occasional note
They do have a different view and might see some things that are not so obvious from the pitch
but a quick "right switch to second phase now" should be all they need
all that shouting is just performance in some cases

It's a pretty fluid game football, and manager's see things that the players don't. If you're ever inclined, sit near the dugout at a game and you can hear how specific they're being about what they want from players.
Same happens in rugby, it's just a lot more subtly done.
Yes but seeing as the match is so fluid then endless and constant instructions are no good, the players will get confused and lose focus.
One or two simple messages fine but 100?
If that's what they were doing then yes, I'd agree.
But it isn't.
There are a fair few managers who let things play out as much as possible and only intervene if things are going disastrously wrong, by which point it's often too late.
Hmm sorry but its not what I've seen when watching, seems to me whenever a coach is shown he is gesturing etc like crazy.
Anyway, just something which occurs to me.
Televised sport is still part of the entertainment industry. Cutting to a coach who is wildly gesticulating makes generally makes more interesting tv than showing them during the rest of the match when they are just watching and taking notes.

At a big game what are the chances the players will even notice or hear what the coach is shouting?
