Sorry guys, I was unaware there was a K1, so I was referring entirely to K2.

The K stands for Karakoram, the mountain range. When surveyed they were given the original designations K1,K2,K3,K4, K5 etc. The others were subsequently renamed, but K2 has kept its original designation.
