If you were asked about the provision of painted bike boxes, by your council, what image would that question bring to mind?

What is a painted bike box?

My immediate thought was this

Google seems to think otherwise

Erm, being the filthy pervert I am my first thought would be something else entirely! However, once my initial Benny Hill moment had passed I'd be thinking of an Advanced Stop Line, much as above.

Then my next thought would be don't bother, unless you're also providing a safe lane in order it can be accessed without filtering.

Still worth it, but if there's more than one lane on the approach, there's space to allocate a 2.5m left lane for cycles only to reach the box. Most governments won't do that yet, though.

Unless it's in a 20mph zone, better would be to repaint the junction and add a few kerbs like www.protectedintersection.com

in Sheffield they are a shade of red like the intermittent cycle lanes ahough i think I've seen green ones too. The boxes are often totally ignored by all road users.
Which made me wonder if it is an offence to do so.

Do they use that slippery paint like they do in London?

I don't use cycle lanes much but i don't think so. I have certainly never heard anyone complaining.
Our big problem is riders sliding off or getting fought in the tram tracks.

Keep encouraging people to report them to www.tramcrash.co.uk please.

Red anti-slip was the weapon of choice in Norfolk - but they used it where there wasn't anti-slip on the lead-up lanes so it mainly seemed to help motorists skid into the box and then stop and I'm not sure how many were young racers doing it as a show-off  - and now they seem to be using just the white paint with no background... but they're using farking huge cycle symbols which are very lumpy to ride over

What we really need is ANPR red light cameras enforcing the first stop line. Motorists go through the lines so long after red that it's not funny. Actually stopping for an amber like you should seems quite likely to get you shunted now

You shouldn't stop for an amber light though, unless it is not safe to continue through.

And a green light does not mean go either, but that's another discussion.
