I was never a great fan but admit to being frequently impressed by his utterly fearlessness - how many other presenters would do this?

Not many - and it wouldn't be allowed nowadays. Remember (IIRC) Lesley Judd being winched onto something over the sea when the loop slipped off?

A boyhood hero of mine, from the mid 60's to the late 70's, he turned me on to canals. And proved, over and over, that bravery has nowt to do with being macho.

Why must they? Blue Peter was not that great really.
Its sad he suffered from alzheimers and passed away, like it is for anyone and their families.
