have got all parts ready for changeover from 9 spd roadie to a 9 spd MTB....but do I need to change the front mech ? if so, what is suited to a Shimano triple chainring setup with rings of 28t...42...52t... ? I dont expect to ever use the 52 by the way...I believe that the roadie front mech cannot shift as well as an MTB one....is that so ?.....ta...

They shift just as well when used with correct levers - pull is different so if you are using mtb shifters then you need a mtb front mech - you might struggle to find one that will fit for 52 teeth though as most mtb mechs are for 42/44 or hybrid ones for 48. If u had bought the flat bar ROAD shift levers instead of mtb ones it would not have been a problem...

I bought a Cross Check that had a double in , I had a granny ring fitted and kept the oem front mech , and friction bar lever , it works very well , but I do have to trim the lever occasionally during a ride
