I have not read all of the comments in this thread so apologies in advance if what I’m about to add has already been covered.
I have just had a look at the MOT history of this Mazda and although it now has a current MOT the list of items that it failed on previously would make me run a mile.

Yeah, it looks good, but it (sensible head on) isn't!! Even the seller was putting me off, saying it's hard to get in and out of, it's more for summer etc etc. I've bought off him before and i think he doesn't want to 'rip off' a loyal customer, instead hoping a first time/once off customer will buy it instead.

If you want a car that you feel connected to the road in a way that just about all modern cars can't do get an MX5. The stock suspension is a bit soft on them, but you can feel every imperfection in the road, the steering is so direct, and they have a really complex idependant suspension setup.
I had a MK3 2.0, looked at a lot of sh1t ones before getting it. You actually feel speed in these cars, which in my IMVHO makes them way more fun than modern cars that you simply don't. even if they are way more poweful. They're just fun cars that were never meant to be really fast, just a great driving experience, more so on a good B road. The Mk2 (like the one in this thread) was the worst for rust so I believe.

If it was a good rot free one, it looks like I'm in the minority here, but I think it's a total steal for that price. What does 3k get you these days, more so covid prices. Sure it's expensive to tax, but what modern car for that kind of cash could you ever buy that would be as much fun as an MX5? There's other convertibles around, but I would imagine none are as raw as an MX5, unless it's a Lotus of some description or an S2000, these are mega £££

In my opinion the car is too cheap if it was a genuine, low mileage, good, rot free example. I'm in the minority here though, I don't class an MX5 like an old Astra or a Toyota Avensis, it's a special car, that offers cheap thrills. It's like buying an old MG MGB or something. But it's reliable and not as slow, and just better in everyway. You have to get it though, and I understand that these cars are not for everyone. There's also a lot of them about, most of them will be rotten. I get that they're a totally impractical car for most people, but I would imagine that the OP is not bothered about that, otherwise they wouldn't be mentioning a 2 seater in the first place.

I got one because I liked how it drove, I couldn't care less if it was a convertible. At the time (2016) I couldn't think of anything else for 5K that would offer as much fun for so little money. But I also found I really liked having the hood down, I used to like it best at night on country B roads, not even driving fast, just a great experience, like freedom. I got the usual comments, hairdressers car, midlife crisis etc etc. You've got to own one to get it, or not get it. It's not a badge snobs car, just good value and good fun.

The MK4 184 soft top looks totally gorgeous by the way, out of my budget for a good while yet.

Just don't get a Micra Accy (unless it's a K11), honestly even if you can't get into the thing, the MX5 is a special little car, for very little cash, drive the thing you'll see what I mean, it's just fun without all the useless gadgets that you get in a newer car...

I don’t know whether the roof has changed but mine had a clasp at each door pillar. Undo those, drop roof down. Tonneau cover on if you want. Off you go. Simplicity itself. My mx5 didn’t rot either. I had a silver one, and that generation which was mk1 had the pop up headlights.

I really fitted well in seat as well and as said above the steering was delightfully direct about 2.5 turns full lock to full lock. The gear lever a short and delightful throw.

As for the Micra i had a drive in it. I got up to 95MPH on the motorway with little effort. It's a bit 'tinny' feeling' and the gear stick is a bit thin and long. Imagine (for those old enough) driving one of those 1970's east European Simcas and you'll know what i mean.

Handling wise it's nowhere near as good as my Mini. On bends it feels like you could turn it over if you approach the bend too fast, whereas my Mini feels much better in such situations. I asked the seller how much he'd give me for my 2006 Mini D. He asked how much i was expecting. I said £1000. He then did that face which says 'I'd love to give you that, but it's not worth it'. He then said "The most i could give you is £700 and i'll also tax it for a year', which might've sounded better if the tax was about £160 and not a poxy £30!

Anyway, my mutt seemed to think it was ok, from a passenger point of view.🐶 Is it better than my Mini and more importantly is it worth nearly 4 grand? No, it's not better than my Mini as i'd say Minis are more robust and handle better than 'tinny' Micras. Is it worth 4 grand of my money? I'd say not.🤔

Simca’s are French not East European , and no matter how bad the Micra is it’ll never rot like one of those did, with seats worse than a hired seaside deck chair, and then after a long run in hot weather the fuel in the hose to the carb evaporates so that it won’t start until it’s cooled, me and a mate drove to North Devon from West Yorkshire in one, it was my first car we had to use cushions on the seats and we were crippled after 30 miles never mind getting out at the campsite after going so far, but it was quite an adventure not knowing if we would get there or have to get the train home!

I phoned the AA today to ask if my membership via car insurance covers battery failure. In other words would they come out and jump start me. They said i'd have to 'upgrade' my membership which with admin costs would be around £140. Luckily my car fired up so i headed off to Halfords in Blackburn to see if they could help. A bloke tested my battery and told me it was fine, but maybe the starter motor needed sorting. He said it'd only cost around £15. I then asked about jump starters. We went back inside to look at the ones for sale. He didn't get pushy with the most expensive ones and even talked me out of a £200 one i thought i'd need, saying it wasn't necessary as they were more for garages that use them every day. he said the one below would be adequate for my needs. So i bought this one for £50 and bought a dehumidifier for £8. That's the first time I can remember when a 'free battery test' hasn't resulted in me being told that the battery was knackered and i needed a new one. How about that eh!! No rip off "You need a new battery" and no "Get this 200 quid jump starter as all the others won't work"!

After today I think Halfords are a very reputable company and i won't have a word said against them again!!🧐

Surely Mini's don't leak any more? I'd have thought BMW would have got that bit right.

I don't understand what you mean.
Mini's of old always had wet carpets from tinworm in the underbody, the only time the carpets weren't wet was when they had frozen! If you're getting so much damp that you need a de-humidifier you have a leak (or possibly a pollen filter that's full of soggy leaves).
