I'm not driving a Skoda! My uncle got a new one every 2 years in the 1970's. Yes, i know they've improved a lot, but just the name alone puts me off. Funny that, as i've only ever had one Vauxhall and that was a 1969 Viva i had in the early 80's.There's something about the name Vauxhall that puts me right off as well!🤔
You'll be a fool, if you don't look at the Skoda these days, on my 2nd ,up graded for better MPG, cheaper VED, £20 ! My Octy swallows the trike ( that's Czech built as well).
So they may sneer, I just say it's an Audi in a Donkey jkt!

Mini's of old always had wet carpets from tinworm in the underbody, the only time the carpets weren't wet was when they had frozen! If you're getting so much damp that you need a de-humidifier you have a leak (or possibly a pollen filter that's full of soggy leaves).

Ah yes, you meant the dehumidifier! I thought you meant the battery problem.

Most cars are 'damp' at this time of the year. I see almost new BMW's at the MOT/BMW service place across the road with steamed up windows when parked up overnight. My car's problem is the design of making the roof smaller than the body. As in the roof width doesn't cover the car's width, so when you open the doors in the rain there's about 3 inches unprotected from the rain. I agree about the old British Leyland Minis being susceptible to leaks. One that i had was so bad that the floor had a rust hole that ensured the carpet was permanently wet. Believe it or not when driving it after a freezing night and the carpet had actually frozen, i had to use similar to these..
Amazon product ASIN B08VD4XQGJView: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Traction-Grippers-Non-Slip-Crampons-Footwear/dp/B08VD4XQGJ/ref=asc_df_B08VD4XQGJ/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=500779883685&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2719850

so my feet wouldn't slide around as i was driving!!

Edit... I heard that cat litter in a suitable holder will absorb the damp in cars.🤔

We had above MX5.

Bought it new 1997, kept it for five years, at which point I traded it for a BMW (big mistake).

Bought a matching hardtop, for winter. Used it daily to commute 120 mile round trip, also had holidays to France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic in it. Luggage. was a challenge, but, doable.

It was totally reliable.

I don't think they are compatible with the new E10 Petrol?

Mrs Skol and I nearly bought a new one in 1998. I had talked her into us needing the 1.8 with the LSD rather than tha basic 1.6.....

Unfortunately she got her sensible head on and we ended up with a brand new 100hp 1.4 16V VW Polo, which turned out to be crap and was sold back to the dealer at a loss after 18 months of warranty work!!!!

"My" MX5 was a present to myself, for my 50th (also known as a midlife crisis ;) ).

Mrs @BoldonLad's question was "where will the grandchildren sit?", my answer, "in their parent's car" ;)

At that time, we were both working full-time, and had a "sensible" car too (Mazda 323).

We had great fun in the MX5, my two brothers took one look at it, and bought one each too

My most epic drive in the MX5 was Florence (Italy) to Metz (France), in one go.

Not sure I could get in and out of it now, so, pleased I did it when I was "young" ;)

Young! Let me think, 1998 we would have been 25

We have always been in work and careful with money so could afford such things even then. The disappointing Polo was about 3-4 grand less than the MX5. Had I known how rubbish the Polo was going to be (If only everything in life was as reliable as a Golf!!!!) and how many years it would be before we had children I would have stuck to my guns and insisted on the MX5. Hindsight is a wonderful thing

Either way, I wouldn't be touching that MX5 @Accy cyclist was looking at, nor would I be swapping out of the diesel mini just because it had an occasional starting problem. My money is on the issue being a flat battery due to low usage and short trips.

You'd think someone would 'invent' a battery that charges up even when it's subjected to low usage and short trips.🤔

On a different note, you'd be surprised how many think the battery is in the engine compartment and not the boot of my car! The mechanic who came to fire it up yesterday had that 'Yeah right' look on his face when i told him he'd be better off parking his car near the boot, not the front to reach the battery. Today the Halfords bloke even said "Are you sure"? when he asked me where the switch for the bonnet was, so he could have a look at the battery. I suppose owners of Hillman Imps and VW beetles many years ago had the same doubters when they mentioned their car's engine was in the boot.

I'll second that, wife had a Fabia Estate 1.2 petrol, a great little car with loads of room, I could get the bike in, only sold as we decided to go down to one car, I sometimes wish we still had two.
