The trouble is that it sets a precedent and gradually wears away civil liberties in my opinion.

Successive governments, with the acquiescence of the majority have reduced our liberties for the supposed greater good - we had it during the height of Communism, Irish troubles and the war on terror. I'm sure we can live with it during the current challenges.

Also, other parts of the world differ on the idea of civil liberties. We often read about China, but it's never mentioned that the majority of Chinese population are perfectly happy with their Govt and trust them to do the right thing. It's like one guy said, "what good is democracy if you go to bed hungry every night?".

Having travelled in China I saw a lot of very very poor villages full of people that didn't look overly enamoured with their lives.
