I think it is a common misconception @Paulq that drop bar road bikes are inherently uncomfortable.

You could do worse than test ride or even buy a road bike from Evans as they have a no questions asked return policy if the bike is not for you.
IIRC you can basically return the bike for a different one within 30 days ? They will probably expect it to be in fantastic condition if you do though.

Test a few.

That's exactly what I am gonna do - I have my eye on the Cannondale and am gonna have a good squiz at that.
