Since the 13th century, London has paid “rent” to the Crown not in money, but in mystery: a knife, an axe, six giant horseshoes, and 61 nails. No one knows where the properties are, but the ritual still happens every year proof that some medieval traditions never die.

In the village of Danby North Yorkshire, if you have an allotment. You go to the castle and pay a fine rather than rent.
I guess this keeps a bit more feudal and you will have no rights.

I was brought up close to Danby! Yes its the "Court Leet" that "sets" the "fines" / rent for common land.

The only rights you have are those you can defend. Anything else is a privilege.

If the earth was to be compressed to its ultimate limit ie a black hole with no space between atoms it would be the size of a 2cm marble!

Hang on a minute ! If the earth became a black hole the. it would all end up in the singularity at the centre. The "event horizon" might have a 2cm size (I've not checked the numbers) but that isn't a physical thing as such

When I was in Uni halls in the first year, another student (also Chinese) had lost his room keys. Instead of requesting a new key, or just leaving his door unlocked for a while, he locked his door from the inside and jumped from the first floor window to get out!

I had a similar incident in my hall as a first year. I returned to my room but the key wouldn't go in and after a bit of buggeration I realised that it was locked from the inside with the key still in the lock. I was now seriously worried about my roommate. I went downstairs to "raise the alarm" then saw him sat in a chair in the common room. WTF? Turned out he'd had a spare key (badly) cut but it didn't work so he'd borrowed a stepladder from the caretaker and tried again from the inside (still didn't work) and the daft bugger then left it in the lock preventing me from using my own key when I got back

The first renationalised train service is a replacement bus....

~BBC linkie ~

First? Only if you ignore Wales:

"History has been made as the Labour led UK government has returned the first train franchise in England back into public control — replicating what has been happening in Wales ever since what used to be called the Wales and Borders franchise were taken over by the Welsh Government in 2021.

After Blackpool donkey operator Freddy Fletcher's death in the 1940s, his estranged wife Vera, who had previously run off with another man, returned to the town, hoping to inherit his sizable estate.

Unfortunately for Vera, not only had Freddy changed his will after she left in order to spite her, but as they had no children, he had left his entire fortune to his beloved donkey Edith.

Edith lived out her final years in absolute luxury.
