Ever wondered where the term 'butt' came from?
The term "butt" originally referred to a medieval measurement for the capacity of wine casks, which was standardised in the year 1707.
Among these measurements, the largest was the tun (distinct from the weight measurement, ton), approximately equal to 252 wine gallons. From the tun, other units were derived.
A butt represented half of a tun, while a puncheon equaled a third of a tun. A hogshead was defined as a quarter of a tun, and interestingly, two hogsheads together constituted a butt, with each holding 63 gallons.
Following these were smaller units: the tierce, the barrel, and the rundlet, each progressively smaller in size.
