I have an old Gitanes Mixtie 10 speed bike, all seems in pretty good shape except the rear derailer will not ride up to the biggest cog. The parallelogram linkage that moves the cage back and forth is completely closed but the jockey pulley fails to line up with the sprocket, I assume that the hanger is bent outwards. How easy is it to bend the hanger back? Can I put it in the vice and bash it with a hammer?

Hi welcome!

Am not too sure what do you mean by the parallelogram cage is "completely closed", but have you tried adjusting the limit screws (one of the two controls the line up to the largest sprocket, see http://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html).

The article also describes how to check for and address problems due to bits having been bent.

The screw is backed off and loose, the parrellogram cage closes as it goes to the limit of its travel, at the limit it is closed so cannot move any more but the jockey doesn't line up with the cog, the only other thing might be to start shimming the wheel but is seems central between the forks.
