Rear Derailleur Noise

Hi all,

Have recently purchased a Cube Agree GTC Pro. Really happy with it, but when I got it home, I noticed that there was a lot of noise and the chain was skipping intermittently.

To cut a long story short, I took it back to the place I bought it from and it turned out to be a problem with the derailleur hanger which was slightly bent.

They tuned the bike after replacing the hanger, and showed me it was running like a dream. Since I got it home today though, it still runs a lot better, but still a little noisier than I would expect.

When I'm riding it though, things also seem a slightly noisier and slightly clunky when running through the gears.

I've tried adjusting the cable tension and made slight changes to the H and L screws but I'm unable to improve it any further. I've also looked at a couple of hints and tips for rear derailleur adjustment, but still no joy.

I would have thought on a new bike, this should run a lot smoother from the outset.

Any feedback or tips on this would be gratefully received, as I don't fancy another long trip back to the shop, especially now that they have fixed the original issue and demonstrated it was working at the time.

Thanks everyone

Mike

Make sure there is no play on the cassette ,I find 10 speed has to be spot on so may just need tuning again.

The chain was lubed already, but I've re-lubed. The other thing is that when I'm on the smallest sprocket at the back on the outer ring at the front, you can feel the vibration as you pedal as well as a bit of noise on the front derailleur...

Any other ideas? Otherwise I'll have to pay for someone to take a look professionally.

Thanks everyone.

Are you running Shimano 105 on your bike?

Yeh, running the following:

Gear Shifters: Shimano 105 ST-5700, 2x10 speed
Front Derailleur: Shimano 105 FD-5700BLL 2x10 speed, clamp 34.9mm
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra RD-6700SS-G, short cage, 2x10 speed

One (final) thing I've noticed is that when I run from the bottom small sprocket to the next 4 or 5 sprockets, sometimes it shifts relatively ok, but other times it's really clunky.

Seems inconsistent. Is this a recognisable symptom?

Thanks

I ask because I've found the new 105 (5700 like you have) to be a bit temperamental. A friend of mine has 105 5600, on a bike that's maybe 4 years old, and the shifting seems a lot smoother and less 'clunky' than mine. Some of my friends run 105, some run Ultegra, and some run Dura-Ace and a few of them who run 105 have mentioned they don't seem to run as smoothly as the older 5600. This may be down to the fact that the housing runs under the bar-tape as opposed to being exposed. I'm not very impressed with the new 105 to be honest, I wish I'd spent out a bit more on Ultegra because, although there's not much difference between the two, it has to be better than the latest 5700. On the other hand, some people say that their 5700 shifts flawlessly.

There should be no major problem with running 105 and Ultegra components together.

I can only suggest turning the barrel adjuster the way that the shifting is sloppy. If there is hesitation when changing to the larger rear sprockets, turn the barrel adjuster in towards the bike, if there is hesitation changing to smaller sprockets, turn the barrel adjuster away from the bike. Also, if adjusting the barrel adjuster doesn't seem to fix the problem, try a drop of lube/oil in the cable housing, or blast it out with GT85/WD40 or similar.

Thanks for this. Really good advice. Will see how it goes.

Cheers

I would be inclined to take the bike back to where you bought it from and get them to fettle it again. Once they say it's done, ride it a mile or so to make sure it is to your satisfaction. If not, return it and ask for a replacement/refund.
It's always a shame when something isn't right, isn't it?!

Just to add. I'd forgotten that your bike is new. Cables stretch and lose tension when they are new and can sometimes throw the shifting off. This may be the case for a few weeks until there is no more stretch in the cables, then your shifting may calm down and become more consistent.
