I have emailed Saddleback, explaining the situation. Hopefully, they will authorise the fork replacement.

I will be back on here at some point to report the outcome. Fingers crossed!
They emailed me back today saying that they will handle the job as a warranty replacement and as it is a safety issue, they won't ask me for proof of purchase.

@fwgx - did they pay the bike shop to replace the fork or did you have to cover that yourself?

I paid nothing at all.

Which was nice.

But did pickup a new helmet from there when I collected it.

Great - that's what I wanted to hear! The bike shop owner was asking who would be paying for the replacement fork to be fitted.

I am soon going to (slowly!) ride the bike to the shop. The fork is probably actually perfectly ok but I wasn't going to ever risk riding at speed on it again after hearing about the recall!

Pleased you got sorted, but they could do nothing else. When something is discovered to be a safety issue the number of owners the machine has had (Be it bike, car or dishwasher) is irrelevant and no proof of purchase is required. They are duty bound to rectify the fault on every product.

I dropped the bike off and now have a while to wait before I get it back. I have another Devon holiday coming up so it doesn't bother me if it takes 3 weeks or so, but I would like it back by the end of October, ready for rides in potentially foul weather in late autumn.

…..The only thing I could possibly do is to see if I could find the original owner on ebay and ask if he still has proof that he could forward to me!
A number of years ago I bought a Zipp 303 front wheel from eBay, suspecting that it was subject to a recall and hoping I could get a cheap, rebuilt, wheel at the end of the process.

True enough it was subject to the recall and I dropped it off at the LBS. They passed it on to the UK Zipp Dealer who, in turn, sent it on to Zipp’s site in Portugal. Somewhere along the line it got lost so I ended up with a shiny new one. 😁

I'll take a photo of the bike once I have replaced the front mudguard.
Here it is in Todmorden park***.

*** In case anybody is intrigued by the warning sign... That park has a very small river running between it and the A646 behind me. Normally, it is only a few cms deep but with prolonged heavy rain on the surrounding moors the river level could increase by metres and flood the road. Action was taken to minimise this. The park level was lowered slightly to turn it into a giant bowl, and sluice gates installed to release excess river water into the park. The photo was taken above one of those sluices.

Here is a picture of the park taken a few years ago after the park had been flooded...
