I was in the centre of Rhyl today just passing through. I went around a right hand bend and a taxi was pulling out of a parking place (obstructing the road so I had to give way to him, it would have been foolish to try and pass). So I waited behind him and eventually we got to a set of lights were he was turning right and I was going straight on (different lanes).
I pulled up in the lane besides him and he wound down his window. He said something that I didnt hear so asked him to repeat it.

Taxi driver: You're becoming a bit of a celebrity are'nt ya?
Me: Only local.

I then cycled off. The driver probably had a chat with his customer about it afterwards (I dont know this and dont know what relevance it has to the thread).

It was nice to be recognised but as it was taxi, I dont know how to take it. I dont particularly have the best of relationships with local taxi firms (I often get drivers sacked).
This guy was from a firm that I dont really have problems with though. He seemed nice enough.

I am not sure being recognised by a taxi driver is something to celebrate, there is the possibility of being recognised for all the wrong reasons, such as being renowned for getting taxi drivers fired...

Yes, this did cross my mind. The chap seemed friendly though. I dont want to think that all taxi drivers are bad.

Is it me, or does everything Matthew says and posts get's negative views and comments in return? Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know.

Not far off, but it is not surprising, have you read the dreck he usually posts?

If I wasn't so pretty I would facepalm myself mega hard!

They're not. I should know, I am one! Only part time as a post retirement job right enough, but in the small town where I live most of the taxi drivers are fine. We have to wear a shirt and tie, and help little old ladies with their shopping bags at Morrisons . I do know that it is different elsewhere; some taxi firms are owned by some very unscrupulous people, and those who drive for them tend to be of similar character.

Matthew,

You have a history of being over zelous in many peoples eyes. Rob gave his opinion of your posts as 'dreck', That's his call I guess.

Yes, I've read many of the posts, and I agree with some, and disagree with others.

But some people seem to treat all your posts as a chance to get on the band wagon and slag someone off. Specifically you.

I just wish some people would read the post and take it for what it is, not based on history.

I edited out all but the above.

I sit in mute amazement, as someone who's never had to classify a taxi firm as one "I don't really have problems with".

I'm not sure I'm comfortable either with "I often get drivers sacked".

Often? Three drivers? Five? Seven? More? How many? Seriously.

I often cook pasta and I often have porridge for breakfast. I also often drive to London.

To have had taxi drivers sacked often in a small coastal town when still in your teens is quite a thing.

Do be careful young man. You really are not a law-enforcement officer or a caped superhero. You frighten me.

Okay, that was an exaggeration. I have only ever had one sacked. I should have been more specific (especially with how touchy people are on here) and said that I have had dealings (near misses/close passes/bad driving) with local taxi firms.

I have a problem with all my local taxi firms - to the point that I refuse to give any of them my business. I'd rather walk several miles home, even when I'm drunk and it's two in the morning (this has happened).

I've never got any of their drivers sacked though, and I'm the wrong side of 40.

When someone seems to have problems with others as often as Matthew seems to, one has to question whether the problem is indeed other people, or Matthew himself! It is only logical and fair!

Whenever I've had a taxi the usual chit-chat is along the lines of 'Busy tonight? Got long left?' Weather topics follow on. The usual response to the first question is something like 'Nah mate, too many drivers out tonight.'

Ergo taxi drivers like fired drivers because there is more work for them. He was probably being nice so he didn't join the dole queue.

I'm sure Matthew won't mind me reminding people that he suffers to a degree from Aspergers syndrome. Having 2 nephews with a similar condition, and TBH probably having a few traits of it myself (it runs in families), I can appreciate that his confrontations are in the most part done with the best will in the world. I suspect that youthful over zealousness is also part of the problem, and that as he gets older he will become more tolerant. Let's just hope that it's not a smack in the mouth from an angry driver that puts paid to the over zealousness. I don't think that's something any of us wants to see, as has been pointed out to him regularly in the past.
