So... and powered by my usual impulsive clicking finger (and after reading reviews)... I've just ordered the planet X
Looks as if it it's designed to do everything I want from a commuter, fingers crossed it will!

Don't blame me if you don't like it! I am considering getting on to sit along side my Kaffenback

Thanks,it's evolved a bit since I bought the frame from their e-bay shop;started with old 105 kit and standard 50-34 chinwheels to how it is now.

It's nearly as quick as my ally road bike with decent rubber on it but even with the touring tyres and kbobblies it'll cruise quite nicely and of course it'll go off the beaten track too.

Sounds like a cx is what you really want.

Oh and not to worry about mounts if you do decide to get 'guards for it(they are good in the winter,keeps the bike cleaner and saves on cleaning!),I use these Axiom guards that fit via the axles(they are better than this review makes out);

I probably should fit some guards, I used to be a huge fan of them but my last commute was fairly rugged and I got fed up with sticks/mud/small animals etc jamming against them and the tyre.
The new commute is a bit more civilised so they'd probably be a lot more practical. I've just got used to the spray now!

I will be holding you entirely responsible!

Is it the London Road?

Yes, that's the one

I was kind of hoping it would be here tomorrow but it looks as if they'll be a bit of a wait...
I shall certainly post back with my initial thoughts when it's here

Cool. Did you go through quidco for some cashback?

No, I've never heard of Quidco? I don't think I'll google it just yet as it sounds as if I've missed out on something as usual!

14:24 Recommendation
16:01 Confirmation of Purchase

1 hour and 36 minutes later - One of the fastest decisions ever, better than @Accy cyclist! Ha ha

I know it's a bit impulsive... but there's lots of choice out there, impossible to really choose the best thing without buying them all and living with them for 6 months!
The spec and reviews are good, the description sounds as if I'd written a "wanted" ad, so I think it's well worth a shot
I'd probably (possibly) be a little more cautious if it was my old, far longer commute, but as it's only a few miles and a journey that's possible on a full-suss MTB* then I'm not overly worried if it's not perfect.

*Did it once out of necessity, never again, quads are still aching 4 years later

Reading with interest as after something similar myself although would def like it to be guards/rack compatible. I know you've made your purchase now but in case anyone else is reading in the same position here's my two cents:

I was initially looking at this beast (bit of a marmite bike!)
http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes/cinelli-zydeco-disc-cyclocross-bike
But just when I'd decided to order it, Halfords put the price up £400!

Now this is in the running but I'm clearly not as decisive as you!

I also liked the Whyte mentioned further up but it's such a dull colour!

Far be it for me to recommend a bike that they haven't even started building yet... but the "London road" does have pannier and mud guard mounts

Go on, just click the button, you know you want to ^_^

Are the wsd whyte models more coloured?

Could also look at the Giant Invite but perhaps under specced? The Brava SLR is good looking too

I have just been through a similar process this week. I bought a Boardman CX Team £799-10% at Halfords. I have done about 45 miles on it so far and it seems okay for what I wanted.
