Recommend a VERY bright light for on the canal paths.

Get a light bright enough that you don't need night vision. Otherwise when you are on the road and Mr Fockwit BMW driver comes around the corner with thermo-nuclear xenon headlamps and fog lights then you will still be able to see where you are going.
Cars don't give me a problem except for the rare occasions the driver doesn't dip full-beam, which is irrelevant for my commute. In contrast, very bright bike lights with an unshaped cone of light shining directly into my eyes definitely is a problem, which is hardly going to be solved by using the same.

My commute only takes seven minutes but I told six cyclists last night to dip their front lights; all super bright and pointing directly forwards. It's not exactly hard to dip a bike light, it's right there on the fecking handlebar, just twist the light down a bit. [/rant]
