....that can both open and close quick links and preferably for all makes of chain.

They must exist and as I build up my maintenance skills will be buying tools for the jobs I do.

Cheers guys, I used the chainring trick this morning with success and about a minute taken,(first time). I just think it would be handy to have the tool for occasions of increased difficulty.

I like that, very handy if needed at the roadside.
I can't believe anyone would buy a tool to close the links. If they won't close with a light manual pull then I move the connector to the run of chain from cassette to top of the chain ring and with the wheels on the ground just push on the pedals to snap the link into place, simples :okay:

I do a similar trick, only usually the bike is up on the stand so you just hold the wheel and give the pedals a bit of a bang with your other hand, works quite well.
I do usually undo these links fairly easily by hand but every now and then you get a stubborn one (or a chain that is full of muck which makes it slippery) so have ordered a removal tool myself, was £3.60 so it better be good ^_^
