Doesn't worry me inordinately, hackbike - just thinking from the point of view that bikes jumping red lights seems to attract publicity out of all proportion: one bike knocking down one person on a pedestrian crossing is piss-poor cycling, I agree - but somehow a hundred people getting killed by cars doing the same thing seems to be invisible to the people complaining about cyclists.

(I just like to have the numbers in my head to chuck back at people who moan about "all those cyclists jumping red lights" and somehow don't see it when drivers do it.

It never used to because it never used to happen.

So maybe if we all did it no-one would notice. Works for motorists.

While we're (sort of) on the subject, does anyone know of any video clips on the internet that demonstrate good (UK) cycling-in-traffic practice?

I mean like a sort of video-buddy, where you can see from the cyclist's POV and there's a commentary or captions by way of explaning each given situation and how to handle it. And where no knowledge of driving is assumed!

As I should have said, motorists have about a billion other offences to take into consideration whereas cyclists seems to be RLJing which is noitced.

Now basically im not really too bothered about other cyclists if you know what I mean but im more worried about a mad moton who has the hump with cyclists and who is protected by their little box if something goes wrong, whereas we aren't.

Sounds like a project for Magnatom!

Nice one Mags  Great video.

I wont even bother mentioning the massive advantages of your road positioning (as you have on this occasion) :boxing:

I'd say 99% of the RLJ cyclists I see aren't presenting a great hazard to themselves or others. It is mostly turning left or when peds have crossed the crossing. I accept this is no excuse.

Must be the season for vehicles jumping red lights. I was next to a car on Saturday at the front of the queue at the lights. She arrived after me, drove through the ASL and stopped across the pedestrian crossing. I edged forward on the cycle and saw she was busy with her mobile. The lights turned red for the other traffic, and the pedestrian phase lights went on. I can only assume that she glanced up from her important texting, because at that moment she seemed to panic that everyone was stopped, and drove across the lights completely on red. Chuckling to myself, I suddenly realised that the bus behind her was doing the same thing, instead it was turning left, and about to wipe me out. I moved over to the side sharpish and then did a double take at the red lights and the car behind the bus in the queue. The driver shrugged and rolled his eyes.

I caught up with the bus driver 30 yards down the road - on a saturday the traffic goes nowhere fast - and got him to open his window. He did try to blame me for staying stationary whilst he was trying to get around the corner, until I explained that the lights were at red - hence the reason for my lack of movement. You could see the realisation dawn on him...

It must be the first time that a cyclist got blamed for nearly getting run over because they didn't jump the lights..

Some day I'll get around to my little sociological project of setting up a camera at various traffic lights and setting it to record until the tape runs out... and then counting the proportion of car to bike RLJs.

So what are we trying to prove?

There are more cars than cyclists so more cars jump red lights and all cyclists are lillywhite?

Neither class of roaduser is but we know that already.
