Red Light - motion detection?

Ok, so on my commute to work in Bradford there is a right turn on Hall Ings on to Broad Way , it seems to me the lights are on motion detectors and they just never turn green for a cyclist. Its a quiet street and hardly any cars are turning right on to it, it may even be bus only. Anyone come across a similar problem? I am forced to jump the red light, or carry on straight and take an illegal right turn later.

Any thoughts?

There used to be a set in Rochester, the ones that were pressure sensitive, that had had the tarmac replaced so many times (or were just not very good in the first place) that only a car would set them off. Bikes and cycles could sit there on a red all day.

You could get off of the bike and walk across the road perfectly legally?

There is a main traffic light controlled roundabout in Swindon that doesn't detect cyclists, it took me a few times to realise that it only changed to green when a car approached.
Fortunately I only use it very early in the morning so no problems going on red instead of waiting for a car to turn up.

You can make a good argument for them not working (if they were working, they'd detect a bike. They don't detect a bike, therefore they're not working). From that you can look at rule 176:
If the traffic lights are not working, treat the situation as you would an unmarked junction and proceed with great care.
But follow it up with a call/email to the relevant local authority - you may strike lucky and get something done about it.

Hall Ings & Broadway don't meet though.
There are no plans at present to upgrade the lights until the present building work at "The Hole" are finished. Roads are going to be dug up.

Only set of lights I've ever come across like that was when I lived in Bradford  Coming back from work down Haworth Rd to the junction with Toller Lane. Sat there for an age till a car came up behind & triggered the lights

I had a set like this near where I worked, sent an email to the council and low and behold it then started changing for me on my bike. may be worth dropping your council a mail.

Let me first apologise for any inconvenience caused. The detection to call the right turn into Bank St / Broadway is done through an induction loop in the road surface, the metal content of a bike should be enough to trigger this. I've raised a fault Ref :- BRAD102696, this should be attended to and rectified to by our maintenance contractor within the next 48 hours, I've requested they check the loop and alter the sensitivity.

If you have any further problems, don't hesitate in contacting me directly.

Response from the local authority. Impressed with turn turn around time.

If you are looking on Google maps it's deceiving. Switch to street view or satellite.

I've reported faults with lights a few times in Cambridge (cars are few and far between at 5:00am), and always had a good response. I've even been phoned a couple of times to verify the specific set of lights direction of travel, and to make sure I was riding over the induction loop. Seems to be one of the faults they take seriously.

On my way home, I've got a right turn governed by lights, where the detector loop is (correctly) not in the ASL bike box.

If you roll over it and come to a halt stop in the bike box, it's not triggered.

Stopping my alloy framed bike on the lines in the road where the detector is triggers the lights. If a car comes up behind me I roll into the bike box.

I don't know if this is any use but might be worth flashing your light at the traffic light, I know some (generally temporary ones) are triggered by light perhaps worth a go just in case it helps?
