A road bike in the UK can easily cost £50 a day to hire, so look at it as getting a bargain whilst abroad. However saying that - I pay €3 a day in the Netherlands for a normal bike.
Yes 3-6 euro appears to be a reasonable charge for a simple robust bike preferably with a basket. Some businesses can make apparently make a profit on it. These don't need much fettling, they don't have high speed prangs. Road bike costs and service do not apply.

But this is the second Canaries Island I have looked at renting and the charges are well out of line (high). So are car rental (but remarkably low) - and without the usual Avis/Hertz/Europcar insurance/petrol scams. If you don't believe me check out CICAR website and Tripadvisor reviews on them. There are also other good local car rental companies. If only they would add bikes!

Hence we shall reluctantly be motons not utility cyclists. But to answer @Drago - when flights are so cheap, fast and only practical way to get there - the only other choice is not to go at all. As it happens that is a choice I would be very foolish to take.

Ah that's why it's so expensive. You forgot to mention you wanted a basket I looked at a wicker one for my log burner wood, pricey...no wonder it's so high

Then why are you worried about being an environmental moton if you're happy to make an unnecessary flight simply because it's cheap? You're as bad as the world leaders who just last month caused over 300,000 tonnes of carbon emissions by flying round. the world to discuss reducing carbon emissions.

What gets me is if it is so hugely profitable why is not anyone here running a cycle hire business, after all this time next year they could be millionaires.

I don't want to live or work in town full time any more and if people are happy to schlep half an hour out of town then there are already two good places to hire from.

You weren't expecting some of us to have considered it, were you?

Yeh! just think at £3 a day 50 bikes rented out 5 days a week would give you a wage, that is if you had zero overheads and did not have to pay for the bikes.

I would think about it, IF I lived in Fuertaventura or somewhere with a similar climate and suitable road network for cycling.
However ..... I live in Ayrshire. No right minded person would cycle here; which tells you all you need to know about me .

Good value when you consider a lot of people in middle management earn that per hour. Let us not forget businesses cost a lot to run.
Absolutely. I don't begrudge paying that for a full days bike hire and have done so a couple of times in the past

I'd be doing it as a secondary business, like the other existing local hirers do. I'd also don't know where you got the £3/day from. Short hires can only be done at those sort of rates if automated like Brompton Dock and I think their overheads are covered by operating partners initially.

Hiring a bike in this country tends to be around £20 for a day
£40/week or £12/day around here: http://www.aewallis.co.uk/cycle01.htm and I think the other one is similar.

It goes back to StuartG saying that was a fair price.

Personally I would consider cycle hire as a very hard way to make a decent living.
