There may have been amateurs there too - people do hillclimbs as hobby. Doubt he's the first to have crashed there either.
Hammond is a professional driver. He drives cars and gets paid for making programmes on it. Bus drivers/chauffeurs/truck drivers (one or two on here) are also professionals. The rarer skill is being able to do it quickly and has he gets to drive cars like that a lot more often than most he's probably more competent than most - me certainly anyway.
