That's certainly the case since the "New golf, latest fad brigade" (Unfortunately) discovered cycling. In both the clubs I belonged to I never heard even one person snigger about someone else's bike, if you were an enthusiast in what was then a geek sport you were welcome no matter what you rode.

A fair proportion of the new golf brigade are just prats. You had the same thing when motorcycles were "The new golf" back in the mid nineties to early noughties. Well off dickheads who went straight from L plates to one litre sports bikes and looked down at anyone who rode something practical for their needs.

When your hobby suddenly becomes popular the downsides outweigh the good.

As a rock climber as well as a cyclist I will now be subjected to ” Did you see that American bloke climb that building” if any one twigs I’m a climber.

Wrong group of people. The engine is you. The bike doesn't matter too much.

Club ride yesterday there were 2 of us on rim brakes and the other 5 on disc and a couple of times i heard one particular person say " rim brake rider " .I didn’t call it out as i wasn’t in the mood to start a debate as I was there to relax but is it a common thing in clubs these days to look down on rim brakes or is that particular rider just a bit of a turnip ?

The latter.

Every time I have been out with my local club, here have been a mixture of rim brake & disc brake bikes, and nobody has ever said anything about it.

I do have a disc brake bike albeit 2 piston cable and the braking is not as good as my rim brakes in the dry , yes in the wet the discs are more consistent but not as powerful .

OK as long as you have hydro i guess , my dual piston cable and absolute pants and even in the wet the bog standard tektro rim brakes were just as good and a damn sight better in the dry .

My son wanted a very nasty full-suspension mtb (i was overruled!) and its cable discs are atrocious.

Especially compared to the hydraulic discs on my daughter's bike.

But I've got two bikes (a 2006 Giant mtb and a much newer Croix de Fer) with cable discs; both brake very well indeed.

I think bigger disks stop quicker right? In which case I'm waiting for the manufacturers to bring out 700mm disks. Oh wait...

I presume I don;t need to mention the concept of rims being more flexible and the braking force only coming from one side of the piece of metal???

Personally I find the argument silly for the back wheel because most riders can lock it if they really try
at which point it is good enough - the tyre does the rest

front may be different, given that the "fact" I was told when I was growing up about going over the bars if I braked the front too hard turns out to be rubbish

I don't feel it's either and I'm surprised to see the number of people calling it as just another aspect of snobbery, look at my bike stuff. I know you haven't. Still there are those who take every opportunity to call it.

I don't hear it often these days, it was common when discs first appeared, but still do occasionally. It's a very practical thing. A gentle warning from the rim brake rider that he/she may not slow/stop as quickly as those on discs. I know that's debatable.

A quiet reminder to call any quick slowing for the benefit of those riders. A very reasonable request.

we all use the usual calls and hand signals anyway .

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.

Is it?

I've told this story before but anyway.

In the 70s I had an early morning paper round. I was into fettling bikes and the day before I'd fitted new brake blocks and tightened the cables. I decided to test them.

Any residents of a quiet cul de sac who were up early that morning would have been treated to the sight of the paper boy furiously accelerating, then for no reason jamming on the brakes and flying off the front of his bike.

Once an idiot, always an idiot
