I wonder if the damage to the wall as a scheduled ancient monument will be considered more serious than the damage to the tree.

I would very much think so. Just look at the national Trust. They have nature as one of their core values but do very little for their ancient trees. Meanwhile the buildings are treated like gods, despite not being living and are often younger.
