Awhile back I drove my car along part of my commute. I got caught out by the road markings, something I was unaware of when cycling. It is a dual carriageway leading to a roundabout. The left hand lane is now designated as a filter lane for the village. Most of the traffic is going straight on and so is bumper-to-bumper or travelling at 50 mph in the outside lane. It’s the same layout at the other side of the bypass as well.

If I get hit by a driver on this roundabout would I be at fault for not obeying road signs? I can think of two other busy junctions in this area that have been recently altered in this way.

You either have to move accross or cycle around with your arm out to the right and hope no1 hits you. Id go for the first option, get into the right lane when safe to do so.

Hmm. If there was a lengthy queue, I'd also go in the LH lane, indicating right whilst doing so.

Another option (if traffic flow allows) is to use the LH lan3, take the first exit and then do a u-turn to rejoin the roundabout from that road. I've done that in the past on a huuuuuge roundabout, where trying to hold the correct lane would just lead to cars undertaking me.

If it's a bit late when you realise, I'd take the exit for the village and then turn around and rejoin the traffic from there. That's the safest way.

I'm a bit confused as to whether you're talking about driving or cycling? And having looked at the google view, if you're on your bike I think you'd get away with sticking to the outside and going straight on.

If I'm ever out for a weekend ride, it's a section of road I avoid like the plague. It's frightening the speeds that cars travel along it, especially as drivers seem to conveniently forget that the speed limit is now 50mph and not the 70mph it used to be (this was changed some time back…but old habits and all).

If I had to use it every day I'd be tempted to cut through Freckleton and rejoin at the next rab along avoiding the left filter at that one too. Better safe than sorry sometimes.

I'd probably take the left turn at the roundabout, right turn on the next at Lytham road, accross the tiny cyclepath and rejoin the main road a little farther along. If nothing else its a backup option if you cant safely get into the RH lane before the roundabout.

Edit: going onto Lytham Road at the previous roundabout as andylaw suggests looks a much better solution.
