What a twat...

I picked out two main points for me in there...

It all begain when the twat's girlfriend yelled something out of the passenger window as they passed the cyclist.

"lost his temper when he saw the cyclist give a two-fingered gesture back" - perhaps i'd better stop using that as my standard response...

"My intention was to knock him off. I thought he would get a few cuts and bruises, not have a broken pelvis and have to be in a wheelchair." - he obviously thought that being knocked off your bike by a car is the same as when he fell off his bike in the park as a kid...

I hate people sometimes.

It beggers belief what goes through peoples minds sometimes... but i bet his sentence is a joke!!!

In my home town (sleepy place with 25,000 population) last year a guy gate crashed a wedding reception at a country house to ask them to turn the music down (was 11.30pm ish on a saturday) and ended up stabbing the groom and the best man! I think he got around 12 months, not bad considering carrying a knife is supposed to be a 5 year minimum now and this guy had 17 previous convictions.

That guy should get at least 5 years for using a 1 tonne steel box as a weapon!

WHy was this guy driving?

Previous assaults......previous dangerous driving......and on medication for what is obviously a pyschological condition.

The guy should never have been on the road!

But sadly a judge will undoubtably give him a pathetically short sentence.

S2 RTA 1988 Dangerous Driving on indictment is a 2 year sentence, obligatory driving ban with re-test, and the forfeiture of the vehicle can be ordered.

GBH/Wounding - S18 Offences Against The Person Act 1861 (148 years old!!!) has a possible tarrif of life in prison upon indictment (yeah right)

That sadly is the type of person in charge of a ton of metal being driven on OUR streets.

The only lesson they learn is that it's ok to do it, as they only get a slap on the wrist 'if they get caught'

St Mary's Lane between Upminster and Hornchurch is a long hill. Going west it is down hill and I can easily reach 30. I take primary that way even though there is a cycle lane. There are a couple of traffic islands and last week someone tooted (politely) and passed me. I caught them up at the bottom as they were stuck behind another car. I just didn't have the momentum to ring my bell and pass them.
Going the other way (up hill) I was half way up and had a bus behind. I was down to about 8 mph and buses are quite happy to crawl behind me. Suddenly 2 cars passed the bus and the wrong side of one of the islands.
I hate that road, but the small River Ingrebourne means I don't have many alternatives.

doesn't surprise me at all. had similar myself once when i guy tried to run into me. luckily for me i managed to get out the way but the police didn't take any action because i had an altercation with him in the road after and thumped his side window. apparently that is just as bad !!!???? anyway, after one more incident with him and then him also picking on another cyclist from our place, i know the matter got took up to the directors meeting and they weren't happy about it, and they have now set up a liaison thing with the police, where we have one point of contact. doubt it will do much good though, but at least our bosses tried.

i think it would help if they taught drivers more about cyclists taking primary position on the roads, during lessons and tests. there should be a whole section of the test designated to it, because it's obvious to me that drivers don't have a clue why we take primary and that's why they get so pissed off. obviously it wouldn't stop tw@ts like this because they are just out to cause harm, but it might create a bit of tolerance with Joe Public

Terrible. Was he charged under s.18 Offences Against the Person Act wounding or causing grievous bodily harm with intent? The article doesn't say. Could even be attempted murder given his specific intent to run him down or at least gross negligence as to him claim he only wanted to cause minor injuries. What did he expect would happen if he drove straight into him? Might be wrong but he CPS are famous for securing the easiest conviction. Then to compound the assault on the cyclist the judge will probably only sentence him to 7 months and he will be out in 4.

The driver probably didn't have any insurance either so the cyclist won't be able to sue for damages as scum like this don't have any assets. His car should at very lest be crushed. The gf should be guilty of the same offence. They should both be sterilised so they can't breed. Perhaps we should bring in restorative justice where the victim gets the chance to choose the punishment.

However it's not wise to make any sign gestures to motorists as they can do you serious injury with their car. Relying on their better nature is crazy. Treat them extremely carefully inspite of the apparent right or wrongs at the time. Once you are down and injured it is a question of survival or damage limitation. As this animal has shown some are quite happily prepared to run down and kill cyclists. It would have been far better to have not gestured or said anything and slowly turned and given a long deranged don't kfcu with me look like Jack Nicholson. When he drove at him he should of cycled on to the pavement or got onto the verge. I've had to do this in the past. Out on the road you really are on your own. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security that someone will help you - they won't and as for the police they won't do anything unless you are dead and then it will be put down to an "unfortunate accident". Sadly once serious injury has been caused it is nye impossible to go back to how you were before.

It's all ballcrap what he said here obviously to get a lighter sentence.

So young and obviously not mature enough to drive a car.

He's a danger on the road.

Something to cheer me up before today's commute.

I have to admit that this is my standard response as well - perhaps someone could suggest a variation that also signals to a car driver that you are not best pleased with his action. Otherwise the only option is one of those airzound thingys:wacko:
