Don't know which is worse for the policeman, suffering a broken collarbone or being called Mr Squirrell.

Sentencing does seem to be very uneven, despite his counsel's protestations he still got a spell in chokey, bet he wasn't expecting that!
He'd have probably got a lighter sentence with a guilty plea and showing some remorse. Bet he got a shock when he discovered he'd hit a copper! as it sounds like he didn't stop from the comment that he didn't realise there had been a collision.

Jeez! it makes you realise how many pent up nutters with "personal problems"there are out there! One minute they're driving along then all of a sudden they see what they think is a justifiable target in their sights...A CYCLIST!! "Oh look there's a bastard who doesn't pay road tax and is enjoying him/herself..let's do 'em :gun:"!!!

A lot of motorists seem to have the view 'fcuk you, you'll come off worse if you don't stop/yield to me so get out of my way'

Just yesterday an innocent looking, respectable middle aged woman started to reverse her Range Rover out of her driveway as I approached. I looked at her and she looked at me and she just pulled out anyway causing me to haul pretty sharpish to a total stop. I held my arms up as she pulled out to say what was that about and she just smiled, let another car out of her driveway and then calmly pulled back into her drive!

I considered walking up her driveway to 'advise' her but thought better of it with the frame of mind it had put me in!!

Well done, I find it very difficult to not remonstrate with the idiots but it never does any good :banghead:

Neither do I, the press routinely mention someone is a off-duty police officer mostly when it has no relevance whatsoever to what's happened
The press mention the off-duty copper because the case is opened that way by the prosecutor.

He mentions it because it improves the credibility of his witness.

The judge really won't have taken any occupations of third parties into account in passing sentence, although the occupation and general social background of the defendant will have been taken into account.

If you talk to coppers, they often complain they get a bad trot in court.

I don't believe that, either.

It's still mentioned by the press even when the case isn't yet in court, I must of missed the bit about the prosecutor opening with that?

The off duty policeman in this case was not a 3rd party he was one of the victims of this thug.
