It's Peking, Bombay, Calcutta, Burma and Turkey, not Beijing, Mumbai, Kalkotta, Myamar or Turkiye. Beijing, Mumbai, Kalkotta, Myamar and Turkiye still won't sound like the locals pronounce it when a native English speaker says it, so what's the point in changing to a more phonetic spelling? All the cities and countries were originally written down in a different alphabet, so they were not miss-spellings. We don't demand the French call Londres London or Douvres Dover. The Germans don't demand we call Cologne Koln or Bavaria Bayern.

Yes, it isn't perfect (nothing is), but it certainly isn't as awful as people make out, particularly if you are just a tiny bit remotely sensible about it. 🤷‍♂️
