It is very easy to do and perfectly doable with a child, though I wouldn't follow Route 6 in its entirety.
When you come out of the train station you need to turn right and cross over the road and onto Granby Street. This is a one way street, but cycles are allowed down it both ways, you have very clear green cycle tracks on it, though be careful as half way down it stops being a one way and you will get traffic pulling out of a junction to your right.
You come to a crossroads and a set of lights, go straight over at these lights, this road is also a one way but you are going with the traffic flow.
You will then come to a t junction with lights, go straight over and onto the pedestrianised part. Not sure if legally you are allowed to ride here, but I have done it loads of times even going by the police and have never been stopped. You will see Boot and M&S on the right hand side. A few hundred yards down you will see a tower with a clock on it in front of you, this is not surprisingly the clock tower.
When you get to the clock tower you have two roads going to the right (one pedestrianised one not), one to your left and one going straight on (not pedestrianised)
You need to go straight on, this is another one way road and they keep changing the direction of it, the last time I went down it it was going in the right direction for you.
At the bottom of this road you come to a crossroads, you need to go straight on, but this time it is a one way against you and you should really walk down it (this bit is a few hundred yards long at the most) This road is called Church Gate and you should have the bus station on your right at the bottom. You will then hit a massive ring road, don't panic.
Use the pelican crossings to the right of Church Gate and cross over the road, you will see a church up on your right. - Route six takes you on the left hand side of the road, but going on the right is better, quicker and safer. This is St Margaret's Way
Stay on the path and go by the church, you will go over a canal and there will be a car park to your right along with hockey/football pitches. Turn into road that services the car park and pitches and ride down to the bottom. Car park should be on your right, pitches on your left. At the end of the road go through a metal gate and into Abbey Park. Turn immediately left, follow the path and you come to a 90 degree bend, keep on this path and you will have the river on your left. You will come to a brick bridge, go over it and turn immediately right. Follow this path out of the park. As you come out of the park there is a pelican crossing, use it to cross over the road and straight onto another cycle path, the river should now be on your right. Keep following this path and the space centre will appear on your left after about half a mile, you need to go down the right hand side of the building as you will be looking at it to get to the entrance, not sure were the bike stands are!
If none of this makes sense I can make a ridewithGPS route for you.
Edit, I should say that Google maps (and all other sites I have seen) have Abbey Park wrong, they don't show the bridge that you need to go over. (Abbey Park is the park with the chain link type path shown on it)
