My suggestion would be to stay on the B5217 through Chorlton, then use the many back roads through old Trafford, then past the United ground and onto Salford Quays.
From memory there is a signed cycle route.
I've gone that way a couple of times through Chorlton to get to the united ground and it was pretty quick and hassle free.
But it's only a suggestion. I've never done it in rush hour.

That's a good alternative too. Come out at trafford bar, left then right at old trafford cricket club. Past man u on left (now closed to cars). Perhaps you can draw him a map?

Ok here's my suggestion for Chorlton to the Quays http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=513813

I'm a little rusty on the exact route, but I do definitely remember going past a school and the Old Trafford metrolink stop

That's a good cut through, however it's not necessarily the fastest and at certain times (because of cutting across the tram stop at Old Trafford) could be quite slow.

Another alternative is just go go up Seymour Grove, turn left on Talbot Road, then right to rejoin your route on Warwick road.

To be quite honest, I would try most routes suggested if I was the OP. If he has a Garmin then we've made it easy for him.

I would look at incorporating the cycle path that runs along the Bridgewater Canal from Brooklands (not Timperley) to Stretford and beyond. I get off at Stretford so I've never been further than that but there's always other cyclists carrying on. I wouldn't be surprised if you can get most of the way to Salford Quays along this route which is a good quality path. I think the best place for you to get on at would be at Sale.

The path isn't great past Stretford towards Old Trafford, by that I mean narrow and unsuitable for a road bike.

Not sure the Old Trafford crossing is the best idea, as 400bhp said, you should cut across Seymour grove. There are paths alongside the Irwell/Quays/Ship Canal when you cross to the Salford side. The A56 big roundabout looks scary but is alright.

You'll likely not see me as my path crosses yours (A56), but good luck.

The whole path really isn't suitable for a 23mm road bike for someone, more so for someone wanting to push on.

But it is a really nice alternative route in for avoiding the roads.

FWIW, the path which is suitable for cycles goes to Stretford Marina, at which point you can come off, nip along a good strip of cycle path through to Salford Quays and on the road.

Thanks for the updates - particularly 400bhp for the detail. Much appreciated.

I do have a Garmin and will download the files, cheers.

Is the A56 is a 30mph limit from Altrincham onwards?

I did have a quick spin around Wilmslow and its environs on Saturday. A few initial observations: fewer traffic lights; but a lot more 4x4s; loads of drivers exceeding the speed limit, but some lovely lanes and countryside...

Oh, can anyone recommend a decent pub or two in Wilmslow...

No worries fella, it's 30 to the penultimate set of traffic lights before the M60, then goes to 40 for about 2 miles. The 30/40 change/difference doesn't make much difference in terms of safety IMO (the cycle lane is reasonable both north and south on the 40). In fact, the 40 bit is better tarmacked.

Edit, actually if you follow my first route you'll only be on the 40 for less than a mile.

I think I'd go through handforth, left through heald green, right down styal rd to Sharston. To Sale ASAP and pickup the canal all the way to Salford.
A34 up to parrswood is a death trap, so is palatine rd from withington onwards(don't go through rusholme(curry mile unless you HAVE to)).
From Manchester centre I'd use Stretford rd onto talbert rd then right at white city(just before the cricket club) over the huge junction(not as bad as it seems) onto the quays.....or use the canal path all the way.
Looking at the silly cyclist you tube vids you will probably think it is all tame!
Sorry for dodgy punctuation.....I can't multitask!
