Wot Globalti said.

The old saying never fails. If it looks too good to be true.....

The difficult bit will be getting him to realise it is a scam without him looking like an idiot.

Everything you say to him must be based on protecting his pride. Leave the frank comments until after he has conceded it is a scam and terminated the communications.

That's why hey get away with it, those who are scammed are too embarrassed to report it, so it continues.
I couldn't ask him for the photos as he wouldn't let me search.

Before she suggested coming to the UK he told her he was aiming to go to Moscow in the New Year to meet up!

One of us is going to ask his sister to go up to Heathrow with him, although, if this the usual sort of scam she will say she has no money and will ask him to send some to pay for the flight but will never arrive.
I wouldn't want him to make that trip. I would expect that to be the pay off stage - something like getting a text or call that she's held up by customs and needs to pay a fee, being in the airport he'll feel like "it's happening".

Plus it will be most painful.

How resistant is he to a more cynical attitude?

Question 1..... What iare the chances of a beautiful 35 year old Russian girl falling madly in love with me over the internet, then flying over to meet me
Question 2..... There is no question 2

Apply the most basic rule of internet safety, if it is too good to be true then it is nt true

I constantly get texts telling me I am owned thousand of pounds from an accident I never had. They are all deleted straight away. Of course it is a scam.

I have been there..

Elderly neighbour with Filipino 'Fiancée" who now had a sick parent preventing her visiting unless she could raise the funds for their treatment

Thought that the bright side was that he had asked for advice... so we sat him down one night and went through all the scams and how they worked, showing how even the text of the emails was a classic script

However he was also besotted and would not listen

£10,000 later he agreed that he had been conned

I am afraid that in these situations all you can do is offer the advice, and be there when it all falls apart

Does he have dementia? If not then be blunt with him, that pain will be less than any future pain.

You can't help some people... I have given up trying with my own brother. He is an idiot, and will continue to make stupid mistakes no matter how much effort I put into it. So I've stopped doing so. :okay:

Yep, I've friends like the OP's, lonely men's vanity knows no bounds, they think the checkout woman wants to shag them because she smiled.

Post the address. I'm sure someone on CC will be up for a cycling tour to Russia in winter.

It's 99.999% a scam, but the hope yours is the remaining fraction is the profitable bit. Can you persuade him to promise not to spend over some limit before he's actually met her? Although, then, that could be the start of something sinister.
