Use a piece of tin foil and lay it nice and flat on the carpet on your stairs. Carefully assume the riding position you usually take and sit on the foil. After it has had a chance to follow the shape of your nether regions, stand up, and you are left with a decent enough impression to measure and start with a saddle close to your requirements.

You do need to know which bit to measure. Also do in cycling shorts. This will only tell you what width saddle to get, not whether it's the right shape or design to be comfortable

I read it somewhere and yet to try it. It's supposedly a good guide to start with, but only the size.

Good place to start from.

I think only trial and error works. I tried a brooks canbuim (luckily borrowed) which is the only saddle which meant I got no shoulder/ neck or back pain. However it caused a lot of chafing so I swapped for a boardman and tried a smp and have got all the aches back. Sigh
