"A French couple who were caught with 40kg (90lb) of Sardinian sand in their car could face up to six years in jail."

I don't think anyone will ever be given that lengthy sentence. The report mentions the supposed 6 years for a bit of sensationalist journalism. Technically 6 years might be possible, but it's a bit like us supposedly still having the death penalty for treason.

"You can spend 6 years in jail, or you can put the sand on your dining table and spend 12 hours a day counting the grains until you finish"

Which would you choose?

Apparently a grain of sand weighs 0.011grams. With a bit of maths, 40kg of sand contains about 3.6million grains. If you assume 2 seconds per grain, that is 168 days working 12 hours per day

So definitely the counting option. Unless you lose count part way through, that would be a bummer
