About the only option to you is to contact Bontrager directly, as they might be interested in why that part failed and may offer a replacement F.O.C ... worth a chance.

It was not expensive in comparison with the 'ticket' price. There is usually a reason for that.

It's already been mentioned upthread that when expensive parts fail they are expensive to repair or replace. The repair or replacement cost isn't lower just because they're secondhand.

It sounds like a lovely gesture from your beloved. One little aspect of the bike has failed. No warranty,no comeback and bad luck.

The thought to keep is that she cared enough about you and your hobby to make what is really a rather lovely gift.

All the rest, you can put down to experience.

I'm sorry for the hassle you face, but you haven't really lost much and it sounds as if the bike is a corker.
