Securing Your Bikes At Home?

Metres and metres of case hardened 25 mm gold security motorbike quality chain. Two of the bikes are then secured with a wall anchor which is mounted behind the bikes so very difficult to get to. Three other bikes are secured with a ground anchor right in the edge of the floor by the wall behind the bikes, so again not very accessible, whilst another three bikes are on a ground anchor underneath loads of heavy shelving full of stuff which can't be shifted with the bikes there. The remaining 5 bikes aren't worth much in monetary terms so they're not secured at all! They're all in the garage behind a heavy duty shutter, and then outside there are a number of CCTV cameras, some visible, some not visible.

WOW....after reading all these posts I am so pleased I moved to Denmark.

When I am at home my bikes are locked in a double skinned wooden shed. There are 2 locks on each door. I live out in the sticks and even I think I am applying English overkill.

We were in the UK with our bikes recently. We stopped outside a supermarket near Harwich docks and I used 2 wire cables to lock the bikes which are ran through the frames, wheels, pannier bags, seat rails and round a metal rail that wouldnt move. Jannie said to me "You really dont trust your countrymen, do you?"

In Denmark when we go shopping we just use the rear wheel locks, everyone does. I am not saying bikes dont get stolen but we are not at the stage where we need underground bunkers to protect our bikes.

I have rigged up personal attack alarms on the shed doors in the past. That was in the UK.

Speaking of the continent, I've noticed in Amsterdam over the last 10 years, that increasingly they are using much heavier duty locks to secure bikes.

I was posting about this just the other day. My bikes were nicked from a metal cycle store at the house. I’ve since beefed everything up. After lots of research I ended up with.

It’s a very very nice bike!!!!

I did all the work myself but I’m still probably in a couple of grand. I was a little tentative about the CCTV but its great. I wish I installed it years ago. The killer feature is it’s streamed to my phone, any bang in the night, a quick 360 check of the “defences” then back to sleep.

But most importantly I don’t want the scumbags to win. The handler of my stolen road bike is going to be prosecuted so I’ll do the full write-up when that’s completed.
