I am so pleased to see I am not the only one who detests these extendable dog leads. They are deadly.

I nearly hit one once at dusk. It was right across the bike path and I only saw it at the last moment. Thought the dog was loose so, luckily, had slowed. I hate bike paths.

. Im amazed at the moment to see so many people on bikes are on the paths dodging round walkers ,dogs pushchairs etc when the roads are so quiet. Im guessing they are not usually cyclist .If they cant cope with the tiny amount of traffic now they will be in for a shock when some form of normality is resumed.

My 'wife's' father died as a result of a dog on one of those bloody leads. It wrapped itself round his legs. He lost his balance, fell, knocked himself unconscious and his life-support machine was switched off two weeks later as there was zero brain activity on the scanner. He was a healthy 86 year-old.

Being on a lead is NOT good enough: they have to be under CONTROL as well! 😡😡
That's so very sad. Sorry to read this.

Suspect that the lead had already broken & the dog was already running free
It's a possibility, but I don't think so. I would not have felt a tug and nor would there have been a reason for the pooch to yelp....unless it was a very yelpy pooch.

Getting old but not past it
I have one 15 metres long but not one of those retractable ones , a solid one. I only use it in the woods.

How far can I go?
I have a 20m long dog lead, but long line, not retractable. My dog is nervous reactive, so it allows her to have a run, but also means we can take up the slack should we need to (roads, paths, anywhere not an open field really)

Setting the controls for the heart of the sun.
....accidentally.
Cycling slowly through my virtually deserted high st yesterday, I saw a small dog scampering around. I dodged inside it and then felt a small tug on my bike followed by the sound a of a dog yelp. The dog ran off and I stopped to investigate.
My bike was fine, but I saw the remains of a dog lead tethered to a bike stand and surmised I'd failed to see the lead, run over it and somehow severed it.
Surveying the road, I saw no sign of the dog or its owner and so continued with my ride.
If I'd had pen and paper, I'd have left a note, but I hadn't, so I didn't.
Good; although It sounds like there was not an owner at the other end, which is a pity. How anyone considers a dog is under control on a leash beyond a metre is beyond me.

Carbon fibre... LMAO!!!
I really can't understand why these long dog leads are allowed, the said animal in not under control, how can it be when it is 30 foot away from the owner.

Regardless of how far away the dog is from its owner it is still tethered to said owner and so unable to run off. The owner is then able to reel the dog in if need be.
Most owners do that when they see/hear me coming along although there's still a few who will be nobs and not do anything.
On the other hand, the number of nobs on bikes who fail to grasp the concept of using the brakes to slow to a safe speed when approaching dogs and their owners never ceases to amaze me.

Because just like 15 minutes ago as I rode 1/2 mile on the road between bridleways some moron over took me around 60mph within 1 foot on a road that I reckon it's over 15 yards wude

You would if the lead had momentarily stopped as it wrapped up on your bike, just like if you had stepped on it

Cake or ice cream? The choice is endless ...
Whenever I ride, or drive, along a road, I wonder if the person taking their dog for walkies along the pavement using a wander lead understands that Fido could possibly be able to run half way across a, potentially, busy road and still be 'under their control'.
I'm always cautious on approach..

Nearly got taken out by a dog on one of these leads doing exactly that. I was in a painted on bike lane in heavy traffic. Dog on it's long lead ran straight into the road and went for me. Woman on the other end of the lead seemingly unable to stop it. I had to swerve right across the carriageway into the traffic to avoid it. Fortunately the car behind me was paying attention.
