If I've just got < 1 hour I've found I'm more likely to head out on my hybrid. I don't use it for commuting really, which was why I got it, but have been going for quick runs through the woods etc. It's quite scary and fun at the same time!

Thing is, this looks like a Volvo. I use my road bike for commuting, so this bike is going to be more for off road use.

Think I need to get the rack off first, but then was thinking for the style of riding that the mudguards could come off too. Might make it less Volvo-esque.

Should I take these off? Add different tyres? (40c Road Cruiser currently). Spray it? (Joke!)

From your description of the intended usage I would suggest you lose the rack & guards then just get it mucky, job done!
Bizarrely, my Traffic 1.0 looks hard/sexy with the rack & guards IMO.

When I was a kid we'd tape rocket fireworks to the rear carriers, and go riding up the road looking impressively rocket propelled. Perhaps a similar trick here would improve kudos?
