I'd go for more flexible gearing if you want to actually do hilly off road stuff. Those setups are somewhat over geared for off road unless your talking forest tracks in which case a normal road bike with tyres and a light tread would suffice.

I'd go for Ultegra mainly because of the hoods being IMO a better shape compared to the 105s but only if you're happy spending just shy of another £200 to get Ultegra.

I'm told that Ultegra vs 105 is not just about the marginal weight saving but the operation/usage is slicker/smoother. I can't comment directly as I only have 105 but two separate peeps have told me this and one is a bike mechanic.

I'll consider gearing when the time comes to make a decision on buying a bike. Either the Ribble CRG, CR3 CX and the CX5 is what I 'm looking at. Although the CRG is not carbon, so may cross that one off.....For some reason there are no CX bikes on Ribble's website any more, must be a mistake.
