I use Putolene Mineral oil.

As for the DOT brake fluid, DOT 5 is silicone based, incompatible with DOT 3 DOT 4 and stupidly enough DOT 5.1, you couldn't make it up!. I've repaired miss filled DOT 4 systems before and it's not pretty.

I bought a litre of Shimano mineral oil more than a decade ago. I didn’t realise how little I needed. The original purchase it still going with plenty left for bleeding my brakes as and when necessary.

I CBA going to look for mine, but my memory suggests it is more like half a gallon than a litre. I didn't get my bike until late 2017 and I've bled the bikes twice and changed it once - so I think I may have enough to survive the current drought.
