I am looking for some cycling shoes without SPD cleats (I prefer toe clips), just a normal tread.

I want to used them mainly for commuting, also for occasional mountain biking and touring, I was thinking of something like these but they are for SPD. Can anyone suggest something?

I used SPD compatible shoes with toeclips, they still have the stiff sole and the SPD area on mine was covered and part of the sole and had to be removed when I moved to SPD's. They were Specialized shoes but anything that has an area of sole over the SPD plate would do.

The ones I have also have a cover over the spd, but I find they are slippery at times, when walking.

I have found Addidas Berm shoes which seem to do the job, but not too sure about the sole, I would prefer a chunkier (walking boot) type sole.

Look at touring type shoes - less tread on the sole ! Spesh do quite a few. As Crackle said, most have an option to fit SPD by removing a cover.

specialized tahoe are well regarded and look a bit like trekking shoes.

alot of the best cycling shoes specifically for flats (like 5-10s, shimano am41s) have styling that looks alot like skate shoes rather than walking boots. I'm sure shimano however do a walking boot style...the mt90 or something

+1 for Spd shoes without the cleats.
I bought a pair of spd shoes from Aldi for £10 but one of the cleats wouldnt connect with the pedal smoothly. Rather than take them back I took the cleats off and just use them on flat pedals and they are great.

I'd check out Five Ten Shoes the stealth sole sticks to the pedals like glue! I have the Five Ten Impact 2 Low Shoe

Thanks for the advice, seems to me the choice is with spd but leave the cleat in place of a flat sole type skate shoe. I do like the look of the MT91 but the prices needs to at least half  I'll keep looking!

I am getting these once the correct size is in stock - stiff flat sole, can add SPD cleats if needed (I just want something other than a trainer for cycling, no laces to get tangled! http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/sonoma-shoes-ec010934?query=sonoma

I like the smooth sole, cannot use rough soles on the MTB pedals

And £40 delivered (and can get a bit of quidco too)

They seem to come up true to size - I also have the Tahoe in a 44, while the Sonoma is rather too big in the same size
